I own way too many sweaters and not enough dresses (especially for work)! So I decided to go through and do a massive dress try-on at Target to see what I could find for both work and the weekend.
*For reference I’m 5’11” and a Size 12-ish, usually a Large or XL.
*Updated this post on 3/23 to include a number of things I ordered online to try on at home; and a couple items I tried on during another trip to the store.

The three dresses to the right are the same style from A New Day ($24.99) – a V-Neck shift dress with a high-low hem. For me, the Large is just too tight on my stomach/hips/butt. The XL has some extra room on top, but I think it’s the better size for me. I own it already in Black and love it!
Polka Dot Dress (XL) + Blue Blazer (12) – I love a good colored blazer and this one seems like good quality (not a thin material or something that will wrinkle easily).
This is the same dress in another pattern – I just didn’t think this one was as flattering on me; and it was very hard to keep the front seam centered.
This yellow shift dress is a Plus-size piece (1X), as is the jacket (X). I think the dress was overall a little big but still managed to emphasize my stomach somehow (I think I just need to wear Spanx under shift dresses).
*You can’t see all the details here but this faux leather jacket is great because it has these stretchy panels under the arms which make it really comfortable.
This Xhilaration floral dress (XL) is very cute, but just too cute and too low-cut for me. (Jean jacket is my own).
I’m truly on the fence about this Universal Thread dress (L) – it is very comfortable and I like the pattern and length. However I just wonder how the fabric would hold up with wash and wear (I’m concerned it would get a lot of wrinkles).
As soon as I put this dress on, I was in love and knew I had to have it. I love the high neck, the A-line fit and just how comfortable it is! (this is a Large and has plenty of room).
I love this dress just as much (more maybe?) in this pattern. You could wear this to work with a blazer or on a beach vacation with sandals or wedges.
I love the print of this dress! This is an XL and it is roomy but I have a feeling that the L would be too short on me and perhaps too clingy on my stomach. This is great for work, a bridal/baby shower, Easter Mass, etc. (And it’s $20 right now!)
This New Day dress is black with a neutral-colored floral print, and has sheer sleeves and a fitted waist. It is lined and has pockets too! I got the Large in this and I think it is true to size.
And now for a couple tops/pants:
This Knox Rose top ($27.99) would be a great summer basic and I love the lace detailing. The Universal Thread shorts are only $16.99 and so stretchy and comfortable! They are a 4″ inseam and I think are shorter than I would prefer. I’m in a 12 and would say they are true to size, you can size down if in between sizes since there is a lot of stretch.
How cute is this Avacado-aholic tee ($12.99) and camo joggers ($22) combo? These pants are a 1X and definitely are roomy on me but I don’t mind that for sweats! The tee is an XL.
This rain jacket ($39.99) is a good look for less of the J. Crew Perfect Raincoat! It has the same waist cinching feature and is water resistant. This is a Large, I think you can size down if in between sizes.
This pink rain jacket is more fitted and shorter, as compared to the olive jacket above. I’m wearing an XL in this one.
This Who What Wear blouse is a great work staple, especially if you don’t like traditional white button-ups. This is the Large (I also tried on the XL and felt it was too big and just didn’t look as professional with a looser fit).
*This isn’t on Target.com yet but I will update when it is.
